ABOUT US

Don Bosco Hospet strives towards upliftment of the underprivileged through education and social interventions. The Centre collaborates with the Government and other like-minded groups and individuals to make people agents of their own development and social transformation. The Salesian presence in Hospet started in 1987. The Vocational Educational Program was begun in 1989. Almost simultaneously the Centre for Social Action began as a way of involving in the welfare of the people of the neighborhood. The period 1992-94 saw the initiation of a youth centre and the strengthening of the already involved Hansen’s disease colony. Around the same time, Don Bosco Hospet served also as the coordinating centre for several activities. Prominent among them are:
  • Government initiated research survey on the problem of child labour;
  • Karnataka Salesian vocational promotion interventions;
  • A two year action research involving fourteen NGOs in three South Indian states, being executed as part of an international effort initiated by Amsterdam University;
  • A Research ‘Qualifying the Unqualified’ coordinated by Fr. George Kollashany
The year 1996 saw the launching of the Kannada Open School and in 1998 the Vocational Training Program was accredited by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and called Don Bosco Professional Academy (DBPA).

The other projects begun by Don Bosco Hospet include Self Help Groups (2002), management of the Government Rural Girls Hostel (2002), the special residential bridge school for the working children, National Child Labour Project (2006) and the DB-CED Centre for self-employment and entrepreneurial development.

In the year 2008, a new centre, “Don Bosco Snehalaya” was opened for the residential Bridge school for the orphans, semi-orphans and child labourers

In 2009, to help tracing missing children, in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka, the centre began the management of the Missing Child Bureau in Ballari. The project aims at finding out the missing children with the help of web-based technology and placing them back to their homes.

The year 2010 saw the introduction of specialized skill training for the poor youth of the rural areas in collaboration with the Government of India (Ministry of Rural Development – MoRD). Many poor youths were trained and placed in good jobs through this programme. The year 2011 witnessed another new project that was dedicated to the children at risk namely “Child Helpline” which provides 24X7 free services for children.

Child Rights Education and Action Movement (CREAM) a flagship project of Don Bosco Hospet in partnership with BREADS Bangalore was launched in 2013 to establish child participation as the key to child development, child protection and promotion of child rights.

Don Bosco School begun in the academic year 2017-2018 is a new initiative in the history of Don Bosco Institutions at Hosapete, extending its roots from serving the marginalized and poor and training the youth in the technical domains to impart formal education focusing on overall development of children according to the educative method of Don Bosco.
